Mehndi Eastern Art Known to
  Western Culture as "Henna"

Mehndi is the traditional art that has been
adorning the body with a Paste made from the
finely ground leaves of the henna Plant.
The term refers to the Powder
& paste, which then leaves a
design on the skin.
In many Eastern  places,
henna is thought to have a
medicinal value or even
magical powers. It’s believed that henna has power
to protect, to bring good luck & to provide material
things as well as spiritual growth.  In general
henna is thought to be a lucky charm or blessing.
It also believed to  supposedly wards off evil-eye,
guards against black magic, & protects against
darker forces.

In parts of India, henna painting is a very
important part of wedding rituals.  As the story
goes, the darker color the henna appears the
deeper the love between the couple will grow. The
longer the henna color stays on the skin, it’s
thought the longer the couple will be in love.
Another ritual is that a bride is not expected to
perform any housework & does not use her hands
at all.  In hopes that the henna design will stay as
long as possible marked on the new brides skin.  It
is jokingly said that lazy brides may secretly  re-
apply their henna designs to prolong their leisure
time & to continue to avoid  house work.

Henna has been around for 5000 years but, in
recent popular culture, mehndi has enjoyed  a
renewal, musicians & Hollywood personalities
adopted and altered the  tradition.  So now mehndi
is now a temporary, pain-free body art decoration
known as henna.  It’s a great  alternative to
permanent  tattooing.  Henna has grown to be seen
as the hottest new fashion accessory among women
& men.  As the trend grows in popularity, so grows
the list of Hollywood Celebrities who have been
seen wearing henna body art: Brittany Spears,
Naomi  Campbell & Madonna.  Actress Demi Moore,
Drew Barrymore, Liv Tyler & Daryl Hannah.  The
Bands, No Doubt's Gwen Stefani & the Artist
formerly known as Prince” were among the first
celebrities to been seen modeling mehndi. Henna
has been featured in countless magazines including
